About Us

Helping Groups to Grow was established in 2007 to work with people with co-occurring substance misuse and mental health issues. Over the last two years our focus has been on the development, piloting and roll out of Moving On In My Recovery, a 12 session group work programme for women and men who are preparing to move on from formal treatment provision.

Helping Groups to Grow working with treatment providers and recovery groups across Wales has been exploring how peer led groups can grow and develop into an innovative provision supporting service users' transition into peer based groups and networks and reduce the level of risk of relapse and consequent return to drug and alcohol use.

The Moving On In My Recovery programme, which developed out of conversations with people in recovery, comprises of information giving, experiential discussion and information sharing.  At its core is the development and practice of key coping strategies and skills through a series of weekly challenges.  An initial pilot of both the group leader training and the delivery of the materials showed very high levels group leader retention, high levels of participant engagement, individuals connecting with local peer support groups and significantly increased levels of mental well being and overall recovery capital.

To date we have trained over 80 peer group leaders and are supporting 20 groups across Wales. The programme is running as a component of NHS substance misuse provision, within third sector services, recovery led groups and in a shortened format in the hospital based detox unit in Neath.

We offer continued support to individuals who have graduated from our programmes, by assisting people to access to peer support groups and where appropriate, to become peer group leaders. In this way people who have found that our services have made a difference to their lives are able to use this experience to help and support others.

Volunteering to be a  Moving On In  My Group leader is one of the best things I have ever done it gave me confidence  and helped  me get back into work.
